Why I Became A Photographer

If there is one question I get asked more than any other, it's “why did you become a photographer?”

Well, why not? But I guess I never really gave it much thought. After all, it just seemed so natural to me.

After getting asked at just about every shoot and by just about every client, I decided to ask myself the very same question. So while I contemplated this question, the reasons why I became a photographer didn't have quite the impact, as the reasons for why I remained a photographer.

My journey as a photographer began when I met my husband but that's a story for another time. Yet, I can't help but be thankful to him, for exposing me to a completely different way of looking at the world and life around us. As a photographer, I've been granted a new set of eyes. Through these eyes I see people, colors, shapes, light, textures and everything in a way I never have before. I see the beauty in everything.

How about capturing memories that last a lifetime? The ability to document our lives, the lives of others and freeze moments that can be revisited, is something magical. Part of that magic is the power of emotion. With photography one can evoke so many emotions and affect people in many ways. Photography can also be a very rewarding experience, for both photographer and client. I've come across so many people who felt they weren't "photogenic" or who just felt like they were “ugly”. After some convincing, most of them have allowed me to photograph them, and in turn, I've shown them the beauty in themselves. It's an amazing and extremely rewarding feeling when I can do that.

What can I say? The reasons why I became a photographer grew once I started experiencing the reasons for why I wanted to keep photographing. There are so many reasons we can get into, like the ability to create magical works of art, time travel, the healing and therapeutic effects of the process, making money and just how much fun and challenging it is. I've also made friends, traveled to new places and experienced many wonderful things through photography. Photography is one of those things where it doesn't matter where you're from, or what language you speak. Wether you choose to do it as a hobbyist or professional, you'll gain a whole new level of love and appreciation for life and everything around you.
